In 1983 graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations Faculty of Economics. 1983 – 1990 worked at the USSR Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations. Since 1990 president of Interros Foreign Trade Association. 1992-1993 vice-president, president of the Joint Stock Commercial Bank «International Company for Finance and Investments». Since 1993 president of the United Export Import Bank (UNEXIM BANK), chairman of the Board of Directors of the bank «International Company for Finance and Investments». August 14, 1996 – March 17, 1997 - First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Government. As First Deputy Prime Minister supervised economic issues, become country's representative at the World Bank. Since May 1997 president of UNEXIM BANK. On May 26, 1998 after reorganization of “UNEXIM-MFK-Renessans” hold the post of the president and the chairman of the board of directors of the Interros Company. Member of the Public Council of the Russian Federation, Member of the Board of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, president of the National Council on Corporate Governance, Member of Defense Ministry Public Council. In 1999 V. Potanin established non-profit making organization “Potanin Charity Fund” to implement socially important long-term in the field of education and culture. Since December 2001 he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (New York). Since April 2003 - president of the Board of Trustees of the State Hermitage. Since May 2006 – a member of Advisory Board of MGIMO (University). On December 17, 2012 was elected Chief Executive Officer - Chairman of the Management Board of Norilsk Nickel.
Awarded governmental memorial medal «850th Anniversary of Moscow». Decorated with the Russian Orthodox Church orders: the Order of St. Prince Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles, Third and Second Degree; the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh, Third and Second Degree, the Order of the Holy Prince Daniel of Moscow, Second Degree. In September 2003 he was awarded with an Honorary Distinction of the Russian Ministry of Education "For Charity and Compas-sion". He is a winner of the Prize of the International Foundation of Orthodox Nations Unity of 2003. In January 2007 he was bestowed a cavalier of Arts and Belle-Letters Order, Second Degree (Ministry of Culture and Communications, France).
Fluent in English and French. He is fond of traveling, badminton, alpine ski, aquatic sports and chess. Married with three children.
